“Acqua alta” in Venice

“Acqua alta” means “high water” and it is a phenomenon which takes place in wintertime in Venice when a combination of atmospheric issues can cause a large inflow of water into the Venetian Lagoon. this 2019, Venice has suffered the highest level of acqua alta in 50 years; more than 85% of Venice was flooded including the historic St Mark’s basilica.

The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro posted in his Twitter account:

“Today we are also on the front line to face exceptional tides. There are so many citizens, activity instructors and clerks who call me to tell me their difficulties. With pride and humility, we work to make the city recover. We are tough”
